Fall is on its way, which means #PSL season is early. Pumpkin patch selfies, tall boots and scarves are about to make a major comeback. The days are getting shorter, the air is getting chillier, and you’re inevitably going to be confined indoors at some point. So you might as well get some good reads in before the weather thaws out next spring.
Do yourself a favor and take a Sunday afternoon to stock up for your super-cozy fall. Buy a friendly stack of books that will greet you when you come home and remind you that they’re there to be read!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A container of bubble bath that smells amazing
- Bath salts
- Candles that smell like vanilla, pumpkin or cinnamon
- A candle lighter
- Giant marshmallows
- Hot chocolate packs
- Pillows
- Oversized sweater
- Fuzzy socks
1. The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy Schumer
This recently-released memoir by comedienne Amy Schumer is the fall equivalent of a beach read – breezy, funny and bold. She’s joined the pack of memoir-slash-musings set to paper along with colleagues that include but are hardly limited to Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Chelsea Handler.
Read up for a smorgasbord of misadventures, childhood anecdotes, the occasional political rant (I know) and a smidge of life advice.
2. What I Know For Sure, Oprah Winfrey
Oprah’s reflections on life make for the perfect daily wind-down. Savor her bits of advice, learned from years of personal experience, the way those ladies do in Dove chocolate commercials. Most of us have spent a good part of their life thinking of Oprah with near-demigod reverence, but you might be surprised to learn that she’s just as introverted and unexciting as the rest of us can be sometimes. And that’s a good thing.
3. The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah
Kristin Hannah’s tale of two sisters, set in WWII France, is the perfect hot tub time machine for a gloomy autumn afternoon. Dutiful country wife Vianne counters her brash teenage sister Isabelle, who joins the Resistance and implicates Vianne.
The book follows the sisters into, through, and out of WWII – and then some.
4. Life, Keith Richards
Sometimes life is stranger than fiction. Enter Life by Keith Richards – you may be doubtful as to how much he truly remembers, but you’ll certainly be amused by his humorous approach to everything that’s happened in his life so far. And you’ll understand the reason for the lyrics “I was born in a crossfire hurricane” within the first few pages.
5. Wildcard High School Classic
Think back to your favorite book from high school English and give it another shot. Was it The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, or To Kill a Mockingbird? Revisiting a book you remember fondly is like visiting an old friend and wondering why it’s taken you so long to catch up.
