Every marketer is always on the lookout for a fast, free way to get their message seen by new audiences. One of the most effective approaches is to capitalize on the use of trending hashtags.
Example
I’m lucky to get 1-2 likes or retweets on any tweet of mine. I’m just not at Justin Bieber’s level of popularity yet. But look at what happened when I mentioned #RobinWilliams on his birthday…
#RobinWilliams you are missed ???? pic.twitter.com/Erwwyljs5M

Boom! 26 retweets and 37 likes. And according to Buffer, my potential impressions for this tweet was 11.6k – which is 37 times as many as my usual potential reach of 308.
Now, watch how the big kids do it…
Sephora
Makeup is their forte, so naturally #NationalLipstickDay is a big deal for Sephora. But hot damn, look at how much they posted for National Lipstick Day 2016!
Victoria’s Secret
The Victoria’s Secret models hang out on a car roof for National Best Friends Day. Hashtag, squad goals.
Starbucks
Every day is an excuse for a chocolate fix, but on National Fudge Day it’s a downright obligation. Same goes for sugar cookies on Valentine’s Day and a Frappuccino to cool off with on the 4th of July.
Roxy
When you’re a surfer girl you’re always the leader of your pack, but it’s even more true on International Women’s Day! Roxy’s inserted a brilliant call to action here (tag the women that inspire you the most) to amplify the impressions on their Instagram post.
Billabong Women’s
Obviously the Christmas of any major surf brand would be International Surf Day. Billabong executes this beautifully with a call to action that utilizes a hashtag crafted exclusively for the occasion.
Amazon
Amazon celebrates the subtlety of sibling rivalry with this pair of shirts for National Sibling Day. They also speak our mind with the queen of all gym bags (in pink!) for a weekend post, and show us the perfect shirt for Saturday Caturday.
Kate Spade
Last but not ever, ever least. And we can’t forget that only a city girl would hit the hot dog stand with this much swagger for National Hot Dog Day.
Tips
- Make sure the content you’re posting is actually relevant to the hashtag you’re using
- Brainstorm a way to immerse your product in the hashtag topic. You wouldn’t Instagram a picture of a donut if you were selling motor oil, would you? But if you were selling milk, there are countless ways you could implement #NationalDonutDay into your message
