Steven Rowley’s novel The Guncle is the stuff heartwarming family comedies are made of…so, of course, it’s being adapted into a heartwarming family comedy.
Murray Bartlett as Patrick
He may be a tad older than Patrick is described as in the book, but Murray Bartlett was too good as the charming douchebag manager Armond in White Lotus to not be cast as Patrick.
Mozhan Marnò as Clara
Mozhan really caught my attention when I saw her in Netflix’s Maid and Hulu’s Pam & Tommy. She played an intimidating but well-meaning lawyer in both, which got me thinking that she could be perfect for the role of Clara.
Clara is a complicated, conflicted, and very layered character who’s pretty uptight compared to Patrick.
Isla Fisher as Sarah
Isla Fisher is a romcom queen and would play the heck out of Sarah, who seemed to have a one-sided crush on Patrick. She would steal the flashback scenes and help moviegoers understand where Maisie and Grant get their spirit from.
Haley Bennett as Cassidy
Cassidy is described as ambitious and a tad more full-figured than the average L.A. woman. Haley played the title character’s sister in Hillbilly Elegy and came to mind pretty quickly for me.
Gregg Sulkin as Emery
Gregg Sulkin has the pretty face to pull off Emery. Nuff said.
Other actors who would be wonderful in this film
Andrew Rannells is fantastic and deserves a role in this film. If I’d never seen Murray Bartlett in The White Lotus, I’d cast Andrew as Patrick in a heartbeat. He was delightfully bitchy in Girls and super memorable. The guy has paid his dues on Broadway and deserves to be a bigger deal in Hollywood. And it’s no joke that he doesn’t age!
Another actor who would be great additions to the cast of this film include Dan Levy, who I could see having an impactful cameo. He would definitely be memorable as one-third of JED, Patrick’s comical “throuple” of neighbors.
